This is an Extremely Rare "World Class" Huge Light Blue/Grey St. Andrews Staurolite Cross/Fairy Stone with Red/Brown Almandine Garnets from Stuart, Va. There is some slight red/brown/tan on this stone. The main crystal measures right at 1 7/16 inches long x 9/16 inch wide x right at 3/8 inch thick.
The secondary crystal or cross measures over 1 1/8 inches long x just over 9/16 inch wide x just over 9/16 inch thick. This is a huge cross! There is an extra cross attached to this cross. The main crystal measures just over 5/8 inch long x 7/16 inch wide x 3/8 inch thick. The secondary crystal or cross measures 1/2 inch long x just over 5/16 inch wide x 3/16 inch thick.
This specimen has Museum fair to good symmetry, Museum Better crystals, some soft, but mostly nice strong lines, more than a few nice small garnets, some nice light luster and some light translucence. Nice Coloring on this piece. There are some contacts on this specimen where it no doubt touched other crosses, but the overall appearance is World Class and the aesthetics are World Class as well.
It weighs about a whopping 21.06 grams. Huge specimens like this are scarce. This specimen would greatly enhance any collection as there are few like it in the world! This stone has been meticulously cleaned and some gneiss has been removed, but if you handle it much, the blue crystals will absorb the oil and moisture from your hands, visibly darken, and turn a red/brown color because of the aluminum hydroxide in it which is used in antiperspirant and Calamine Lotion(absorbs urushiol oil of poison ivy and poison oak). Just wash it in Dawn dishwashing detergent and water and let dry.The stone will return to it's natural blue color.
