Fore sale is this beautiful and EXTREMELY RARE antique blue on blue or blue on gray Spongeware pitcher. The sponging pattern is unusual - looks like birds pattern to me. This piece is from the late 1800's or early1900's. Check out the turn marks on the inside that were created by the potter during the turning process when the clay was still green. It is crudely hand made with wonderful character.

8-7/8" high x 5-3/4" dia. NOTE: The last two photos were taken indoors. I would consider this piece to be near mint "as made" condition. I find no post manufacturing damage. There are numerous glaze skips, pops and pits on this piece.

The tip of the spout has a glaze rub approx. There is a large glaze miss on the back inside of the pitcher opposite the handle. CRACKS, HAIRLINE CRACKS, OR REPAIRS. This piece is in AMAZING condition especially considering it's likely over 100 years old and was used as a utilitarian piece on a daily basis. It has the usual manufacturing characteristics found on OLD salt glaze stoneware i.

Pits, pops, glaze skips, rubs, runs, bubbles, glaze separations, staining, crazing, and wrinkles & lines in glaze.
