A blue glazed composition wedjat amulet with moulding to both faces, black pigment to the eye; pierced. Property of a Essex gentleman; acquired from a collection formed in the 1920s. The wadjet, or udjat, eye (literally'the sound one') was later called the eye of Horus, after the eye of the falcon headed god Horus, which had been plucked out during one of his interminable battles with Seth, and then restored by Thoth.

Horus was the later Greek Haroeris, the celestial falcon and great creator god, whose right eye was the sun, and whose left eye the moon, and is an ancient symbol of protection, royal power and good health. Ex British Collection formed before 1980/ CERTIFIED AUTHENTIC.
